Workshops

Beckie Kravetz is available to teach in-person or virtual group workshops or private tutorials. A variety of options are available, from a basic 2 hour face-casting session to multi-day classes that teach casting, sculpting, and several mask making techniques. Beckie can also serve as a consultant on your mask theater production, working with actors or students to design and create their own masks for a specific theatrical or community event.

Unit 1: Making a face cast

In this unit we will use plaster-impregnated gauze bandage to create a mold of a human face.  This negative mold will be filled with plaster of paris to create a positive cast that will be used as a base for sculpting the mask in clay.

Unit 2: Sculpting the Mask

Using either plasticine (oil-based) or WED (water based pottery clay with special additives to retard the drying) we will create a clay sculpt that will form the base of our final mask.  We will discuss elements of character, and how sculpting for a mask differs from sculpting a portrait in clay.

Unit 3: Making a Plaster Mold

Using the sculpt created in Unit 2, or any existing mask sculpt in oil-based or water-based clay, this unit will show you how to create a negative mold that can be used for casting latex or neoprene rubber.  We will be creating half or full-face one-part molds (not molds for full-head “helmet” masks).

Beckie’s teaching experience includes working with students of all ages and abilities. She has received Artist-in-Residence grants from the National Education Association, and Arts Councils in California, Arizona and Massachusetts. Beckie was a featured speaker at the 2024 United States Institute for Technical Theater National Expo..

Workshops are also available in theatrical and opera makeup.
